Introduction

The Newgy Program is… Kids having fun. Kids are the catalysts that will allow the US to eventually dominate the world in the sport of table tennis. This will only happen, however, when kids are introduced to all the excitement the sport has to offer at a young age.

Mr. Newgarden, founder and President of Newgy Industries, realized many years ago that table tennis has many qualities that are perfect for children. People of all ages, gender, and physical capabilities play. The sport can be enjoyed leisurely or as an aerobic workout; when played at the higher levels it is a source of serious competition and skill.

Like most sports, participants learn about the rule of law, good citizenship and the fun side of competition. Children are the reason this program developed. Through this program, Newgy can make a positive impact on thousands of families and millions of young people throughout the US.

Explanation

The Newgy Program is a two-part grassroots development effort. 1. Implementation of a uniquely designed striking skill curriculum based on the sport of table tennis and easily adaptable to elementary classrooms nationwide. 2. Implementation of a fun and exciting table tennis competition that allows students, even at the earliest stages of development, a chance to compete individually in athletic competition.

The Striking Skills Curriculum was developed with help from elementary physical education teachers to meet standard curriculum requirements and the needs of classrooms throughout the United States. It provides educators with elementary level activities that allow children to develop the skills necessary to enjoy the sport of table tennis.

The Curriculum begins in the elementary levels with nontraditional forms of table tennis activities because the skills necessary to play generally exceed the abilities of teacher and student. Skill development is emphasized without the use of table tennis tables. This allows children to participate in the sport on a level that promotes personal development and accomplishment. It further allows teachers to teach on a level that both teacher and student find exciting.

The Pong Master School Challenge is the second part of this development formula. This tournament is a fun and exciting table tennis skills competition played by students against Robo-Pong 2000. Robo-Pong 2000 is a robot specifically designed to expedite skill-development for serious players, provide aerobic and hand-eye coordination exercises for fitness buffs, and fun for children of all ages.

Each individual Physical Education Teacher conducts the tournament, within their regularly scheduled class times. Children are excited about the event because they need only have the proper grip to compete and have fun. Teachers are excited about conducting the event because the contest awards the winning students school thousands of dollars worth of physical education equipment that might not otherwise be obtainable. This event ties the program together. It has the right ingredients to grow into a national event with huge sponsorship potential.
