The National Senior Games Association (NSGA) is a 501(c)3, non-profit, corporation dedicated to promoting healthy and active lifestyles for athletes age 50 and over. A recognized multi-sport organization of the United States Olympic Committee, the NSGA is comprised of 49 Member Organizations and 2 Associate Member Organizations who conduct state or national multi-sport competitions, which serve as qualifiers for the National Senior Games.

The 2015 National Senior Games were held this week in Minnesota. 12,000 athletes ages 50 and up competed in 21 different sports, including table tennis. Every state was represented with our home town state of Tennessee taking home the 7th most medals of all the states.

The table tennis events included Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles in ages groups ranging from 50 to 90+.

Congratulations to all the senior athletes that competed in and won at this year’s National Senior Games!

Newgy’s Larry Thoman placed 4th in his Men’s Singles division, 55-59. Dennis Roundtree of Nashville placed 3rd in his Men’s Singles division, 55-59. Friend of Newgy’s, Sue Garnier, placed 4th in Women’s Doubles, 55-59.

Some of the world’s best table tennis action was on full display at the 2015 U.S. Table Tennis Open in Las Vegas last week.

More than 1,000 table tennis players from over 30 countries competed in several events including men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, mixed doubles, juniors, boys and girls, Hardbat, Sandpaper and Para.

This year’s event also featured the “World’s Biggest Ping Pong Pool Party” at The LINQ Hotel Pool.

Sometimes table tennis players go through, what I refer to as, Post-Traumatic Table Tennis Rating Point Loss Disorder (PTTTRPLD), not to be confused with the actual medical condition of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Often, at the conclusion of a table tennis match, players seem traumatized by a loss. They can’t seem to think clearly and often say and do crazy things because they are so upset. This traumatized state of mind usually leads to more and more losses. If you want to have the best mental game possible, here is what you need to do.

#1 Don’t fear losses. You will lose matches in nearly every table tennis tournament. It is a matter of your perspective before, during, and after the match that will keep you playing your best throughout the tournament.

#2 Fight for fair play DURING the match. If you leave the table complaining about your opponent cheating on the score, serving illegally, and taking too much time between points, there is nothing that the official or your coach can do about it AFTER the match. Having fights in the parking lot doesn’t change the result of the table tennis match either.

#3 Think long term. When you put all of your hope and glory into 1 match, you will feel too much pressure. By thinking long term, you will be able to relax, while giving your best, and realizing that this 1 match is merely a stepping stone toward your ultimate table tennis goal.

Have you been thinking about becoming a Table Tennis Coach, or did you recently start coaching?

Many new and aspiring table tennis coaches talk to me about improving their coaching skills. I feel that the most important aspect is developing credibility early on.

So how do you establish credibility if you aren’t the best table tennis player or coach, and haven’t coached any elite students yet? You quote.

Quoting world class table tennis players, world class table tennis coaches, and showing pertinent videos to your students, will help them see you in that level of the sport. For example, if you recently read a coaching article by Liu Guoliang about the forehand drop shot, then consider teaching your students that stroke. At the end of the lesson, you can read the article to them and possibly show them a video of some top table tennis players performing the forehand drop shot. Your students will be able to see that you yourself can properly convey the information while validating your sources.

As your students begin to trust you more and more, then you won’t need to quote quite as often. Just remember that quoting gives you credibility while showing that you are up-to-date with teaching the best table tennis techniques in the world.

The South Florida Newgy Robo-Pong U.S. Open Warm-Up Table Tennis Tournament will be July 3-5, 2015 at the Broward Table Tennis Club at 11 SW 12th Avenue in Dania Beach, Florida.

$9,000 in cash and prizes will be up for grabs at this 4-Star USATT sanctioned table tennis tournament.

The annual event is sponsored by Newgy Robo-Pong, Broward Table Tennis Club, The Kahan Family, Ft. Lauderdale Convention and Vistors Bureau, and Flanigan’s.

Proceeds to benefit the Broward Table Tennis Club and SFTTO Junior Programs.
